Operations at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos were particularly affected, leaving passengers stranded and flights delayed. An Air Peace flight scheduled to depart Lagos at 6:30 a.m. was unable to take off following the disruption.
Similar disruptions were reportedly recorded at Air Peace terminals across other airports in the country.
The Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Michael Achimugu, confirmed that the development was linked to a labour dispute.
“Yes, it is a union thing. When I get to the airport, I will be able to get more factual details of the situation,” he said.
Passengers affected by the disruption have taken to social media to express frustration over the situation.
One passenger, identified on X as YoufoundAlex, said he was stranded at the Lagos airport while trying to travel to Abuja for a 9:00 a.m. appointment.
“I have a 9:00 a.m. appointment in Abuja today, but unfortunately, I am currently stranded at the Lagos airport due to an ongoing protest by Air Peace workers, which has resulted in the shutdown of the airport and disruption of flights,” he wrote.
The Air Peace management had yet to issue an official statement on the disruption at the time of filing the report.
It also remained unclear whether the protest had affected the operations of other airlines at the affected airports.
